Fashion Design Study


Fashion design is considered as a form of art which is dedicated to the creation of clothing and any type of lifestyle accessories. It is such a profession which is for those who love and nourish style, fashion, trend and creativity in their heart and mind and believe in authenticity. To be a fashion designer, a student has to have passion for styling, fabric, colors and design and interest to play with colors, tones, shades and so on. They develop a sensibility to demonstrate their design philosophy.  This is not as smooth as it may sound.

It is mainly a course of four years for B.Sc. There is also an another way of studying fashion designing which is diploma. It is full time or part time course and its duration is only one year. The subjects of fashion designing may vary from institutions to institutions but in general the following list of subjects are studied almost everywhere. Fashion designing subjects for B.Sc. are – Pattern making and garment construction, Textile Wet Processing, Elements of Fashions and Designs, Fashion Illustrations and Design, Fashion Art and Design, Textile and Apparel Testing, Apparel Computer Aided Design, Fashion Retailing, Marketing and Merchandising  Draping and Needle Craft, Entrepreneurship and Development, Apparel Quality Management, Clothing Culture and Communication, Garment Surface Ornamentation,Clothing Culture andCommunication, fashion Portfolio and Design Collection and so on.

On the other way, in diploma of fashion designing, it is detruncated into 3 modules. In the 1st module, the basic concepts of designing elements of fashion, fashion cycle, different types of tools used for designing etc. are introduced to students. The subjects of 1st module are clothing construction, surface ornamentation, history of fashion, pattern making, textile science, design concept, illustration etc. 2nd module begins with the psychology of colors and clothing construction of pajama, shirts, pants etc. and also history of fashion and so many other things. The subjects are Design concept, History of fashion, Surface Ornamentation and clothing construction. In the 3rd module, the syllabus includes garment industry, illustration, pattern makingetc. which help you to learn all procedures in step by step.

Fashion designing is mainly a practically oriented subject and thus, the online classes for learning fashion designing are not sufficient at all. This online program mainly focuses on retail management, retail merchandising and business side of fashion.

Students who successfully graduate from a fashion degree course can pursue postgraduate study in specialized area or career within fashion industry. There are many exciting and diverse job opportunities in the fashion world and the industry needs people with many different skills. Such as – in House Fashion Designer, Pattern Cutter, Costume Designer, Fashion Forecaster, Fashion Stylist, Own label, Fabric and Trim purchaser, Fashion Buying, Fashion Journalist , Fashion Editor, Fashion Marketing Industry, Image Consultant, Quality Controller, Production Supervisor, Fashion Show Producer,Personal stylist, Graphic Designer, Technical Designer, Fashion Consultant, Fashion Coordinator, Fashion Entrepreneur etc. Fashion Industry is very fast paced where one has to evolve their work according to people design requirements.

There are a few institutions in Bangladesh which help students to mold their creative and artistic personality. The top listed fashion designing college or universities of Bangladesh are BUTEX, BUFT, SMUCT, NIFT,Pearl Fashion Institutes, Sonargaon University Raffles Institutes of Higher Education and so on. There are also many institutes of Bangladesh which provide diploma course in fashion designing. They are – NITER, Shyamoli Textile Engineering College, CFTM, BIST, SCTFT, AIFT, JIFT, Dhaka Institute of Fashion and Technology, Design Academy Bangladesh etc.

The top colleges of abroad in which they give priority to fashion study are Central Saint Martins (London, UK), London College of Fashion (UK) , Istituto Marangoni (Italy), Kingston University (UK), Royal College of Art (UK) , ESMOD (France), University of Westminster (UK), Polimoda (Italy),Studio Bercot (France) and so many on.

Though it can take years to get recognition in this industry but it ensures job security and a good earning for fashion designers.
